Salvador Dali was born on May 11, 1904 and is considered the world's most famous surrealist painter. His most well known work is The Persistence Of Memory, painted in 1931.Not only was Dali a painter, he also worked in photography, film, sculpture, fashion and even had a line of fragrances.
While Dali's art was his true talent, it was his eccentric personality that drew people's attention to him. Dali had a reputation for doing some quite unusual things and this as well as his incredible genius talent was what propelled him to his star status in the art world. Dali made claims that his source of creative energy was his flamboyant personality.
Dali's extraordinary talent was recognized in his early teens as he immersed himself in his paintings. At the age of 17 he enrolled in the Madrid School of Fine Arts and soon discovered surrealism which would define his work for the rest of his life.
Dali's work reflected is bizarre and introspective imagination years before he joined the surrealist movement officially in 1929.
Dali eventually moved to the United States where he somewhat transformed his life into that of a celebrity. Besides his paintings he started designing jewelry, stage sets, working with Alfred Hitchcock and painting celebrity portraits.
Dali painted in religious and scientific themes and merged the two into his own brand of surrealist fantasy. Some of his more famous works are Apparatus and Hand, Cubist Self Portrait, Metamorphosis of Narcissus, Geopoliticus Child Watching The Birth of The New Man, Raphaelesque Head Exploding, The Sacrement Of The Last Supper, The Discovery Of America by Christopher Columbus and one of my personal favorites, The Hallucinogenic Toreador.
Salvador Dali died in 1989 in the same town he was born in 85 years earlier, Figueras, Catalonia, Spain.
